Power Storage & Balancing
“Managing the introduction of intermittent renewable energy sources into electricity transmission networks on a wide-scale is essential for ensuring the stability and flexibility of the grid, especially in an HVDC context. This will be achieved through innovative storage solutions that call on hybrid solutions.”
Renaud Guillaume, Programme Director – Power Storage & Balancing
The Power Storage & Balancing research programme aims to develop solutions that increase grid flexibility and offer storage that is adapted to the needs of new ancillary services. A wide range of energy storage technologies at various stages of maturity already exist. To meet new Grid Code requirements, each of them must be considered.
Our research programme began with Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) which is the most mature concept in terms of existing production capacity and storage volume. We have already developed new methods for designing hydraulic shapes that are more secure when used in turbine mode during transient sequences.
In 2017 SuperGrid Institute renovated the experimental hydraulic test rig in the CREMHyG laboratory at Grenoble INP. This hydraulic platform is capable of testing every kind of reversible pump turbine in all four quadrants to gather data on their efficiency, cavitation and dynamic behavior according to IEC 60193 standard requirements.
The Power Storage & Balancing research programme is focused on developing hybrid solutions for new HVDC projects or for existing AC infrastructure. The specific demands of long-distance meshed grids and geographic conditions (continental and offshore) require research into new combinations of production assets and storage technologies with high efficiency.
The particularities of long-distance meshed grids and the geographic conditions involved (continental and offshore) call for research into new combinations of production means and highly efficient storage technologies.
