Energy based and non-energy based control strategies for Modular Multilevel Converter with embedded storage


This paper deals with an HVDC system based on MMC with embedded storage capacity of 10%. The dynamic behavior of Energy Based (EBC) and Non-Energy Based (NEBC) controls is analyzed and compared for balanced and unbalanced storage distribution. The EMTP simulations results show an equivalent
performance for both controls when storage is balanced. While the NEBC control highlight limitations for unbalanced storage management, the EBC shows satisfactory overall performance.
