Optical leakage current monitoring for HVDC cables: concept, latest sensor development and perspectives

Monitoring the leakage current in cable insulation has shown to have the potential to be used as a tool to assess the operating state of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables.

SuperGrid Institute has been developing a novel leakage current sensor, based on a magneto-optical technique, the Zeeman Effect. It is designed for high sensitivity and non-intrusive online current measurements for HVDC cable systems. The development of this current sensor is part of the NEWGEN project. The latest laboratory progress and performances are presented in this paper along with perspectives on SuperGrid Institutes monitoring vision of HVDC cable systems.
