A one-day training to understand & experience direct current (DC)

This course is a modular introductory training that provides knowledge and understanding of high-voltage and medium-voltage direct current (HVDC and MVDC) systems and technologies.

  • Course language: English.

  • Certificate on completion of the course.

  • Prerequisites: basic knowledge in electrical systems.

  • Intended audience: employees of power producers, equipment manufacturers, network operators, consultants and any other professional wishing to gain basic knowledge on DC technologies to address related innovation and development challenges within their companies.

SuperGrid Institute offre une formation sur les technologies DC
Managing the stability of a DC network requires the control systems to be much more dynamic than those used in AC networks.

Course syllabus & objectives

Introduction to HVDC

Overview of key applications, system configurations and technologies, with a particular focus on VSC and LCC conversion. Through this course, the benefits of using HVDC in conjunction with HVAC as well as the main technical drivers for the future development of HVDC grids are addressed.

  • Understand the basics of HVDC power systems and the challenges related to the integration of renewable energy resources, the increasing demand for power and energy transition issues. Identify the technical challenges of very long-distance power transmission and the use of DC current to reinforce the power grid.
  • Understand the technical challenges of emerging HVDC solutions : VSC/LCC converters, cables and switchgear.
  • Grasp the main protection strategies for HVDC systems, from point-to-point architectures to multi-terminal configurations. Understand the operation and importance of DC circuit breakers in protecting networks.

Introduction to MVDC

Exploring the current state of power systems and the motivations behind the shift towards MVDC distribution networks. The second part focuses on the key components of MVDC networks, including various types of power converters (AC-DC, DC-AC, DC-DC), cables and switchgear.

  • Understand the architecture, control, and protection of medium voltage AC and DC networks.
  • Compare MVAC and MVDC networks by analysing their advantages, limitations, and applications.
  • Identify and explain the role of key MVDC network components, including converters, cables and switchgear.
