The national congress of dielectric spectroscopy (SDM2) took place at LyonTech on the 6th and 7th of June at the La Doua academic campus. A number of our materials experts attended to present some of the innovative studies that are under way at SuperGrid Institute.
SDM2 brings together the scientists using Impedance Spectroscopy to study (di)electric properties of materials (conductivity, real permittivity, dielectric loss, …) from all over France. For a day and a half, academics and industrialists exchange their ideas on this state of the art characterisation technology which is one of the key methods of understanding dielectrics that are used in electric insulation for the “supergrid”.
SuperGrid institute has owned a dielectric spectrometer since 2015 and has used it to carry out numerous tests, thereby developing its materials expertise. As such, several of our materials experts have presented their work in this symposium. Firstly, a poster on the “comparison of dielectric spectroscopy versus an in-house DC conductivity test rig” to obtain the resistivity value of different polymer materials was submitted. This poster was well received because not only did it introduce a characterisation platform dedicated to supergrid technologies but also because it emphasised the correct way to characterise and analyse data using the two different testing equipments.
In addition to this poster on the theory on characterisation protocols, some further spectroscopy applications were illustrated. Thibaut Lefort, a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the institute, presented part of his PhD work in a talk entitled “Spectroscopie diélectrique de réseaux époxy-liquide ionique ”. A second poster entitled “Study of electrical and thermal properties of epoxy-anhydride composite materials for high voltage insulation” was also presented at the Congress. It was related to Loriane Desmars’ PhD, which she completed at SuperGrid Institute and defended with distinction in April 2019.
