Jicable is an international forum relating to insulated power cables and accessories, ranging from low voltage and special cables to ultra-high voltage cables and new technologies. The forum provides the perfect environment to exchange information on progress in research, industrial development, cable installation, operation & diagnoses. SuperGrid Institute was highly involved in this 10th edition of the conference, with 4 presentations and 1 participation as a “rapporteur”.

The Association Grand Projects 21 – Major Programmes and Projects for the 21st Century (AGP21) met this Thursday in Versailles to discuss the development of interconnected electricity networks on a global scale. SuperGrid Institute was invited to present its vision and discuss the appeal of multi-terminal HVDC technologies in the design and construction of future energy highways. The subsea node concept developed at SuperGrid Institute was also introduced as an essential building block for extending offshore networks and integrating renewable energies on a wide-scale.

LISORE consortium plenary meeting at SuperGrid Institute

SuperGrid Institute was pleased to host the LISORE consortium plenary meeting this Wednesday. This 15-month project that began in January 2019 aims to explore the feasibility and develop a technological roadmap from which innovative low-cost substations can be developed, thereby enabling the integration of marine energies by 2025. By participating and organising this day, SuperGrid Institute has increased its visibility and positioned itself as an expert partner in the domain of innovative electrical systems. The visit of our test platforms enabled us to demonstrate to the project participants how we are supporting the development of the sector through our expertise and state of the art facilities.

Follow up of space charge distributions in HVDC cable during a Pre-Qualification test using the Pulse ElectroAcoustic technique and the Thermal Step Method

In order to better understand the evolution of space charge and electric field distortions during the application of electro-thermal stresses to a HVDC cable system, the present paper shows the follow up of periodic space charge characterizations on a HVDC cable during part of a Pre-Qualification test using both the Pulse ElectroAcoustic technique and the Thermal Step Method. The focus is on the evolution of space charges distributions during load cycles and high load sequences according to the Cigré TB496 recommendation.

Pole-to-ground fault protection strategy for HVDC grids under symmetrical monopolar configuration

This paper proposes a novel pole-to-ground fault protection strategy for HVDC grids under symmetrical monopolar configuration employing low-speed DC breakers and pole rebalancing reactor (PRR) located at AC side to manage the rebalancing of the pole voltages. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the detailed description of the primary and backup protection sequences. In the second part, the proposed concept is validated through EMT simulations performed on a 4-terminal HVDC grid.

Comparaison de mesures de conductivité obtenues par spectroscopie diélectrique et mesure de courant sous tension continue sur une résine époxy

De par sa facilité d’utilisation et sa capacité à isoler la permittivité complexe représentant les pertes dans un matériau tout en faisant un balayage fréquentiel, la spectroscopie diélectrique semble être une méthode de choix pour obtenir la valeur de conductivité ohmique d’un matériau. Cette méthode pourrait permettre de s’affranchir des temps conséquents de stabilisation généralement associés aux mesures de conductivité issues de courbes courant-tension effectuées suivant la norme IEC 62631-3. Par l’intermédiaire d’une comparaison entre ces 2 méthodes, les auteurs vont revenir sur les limites de chacune d’entre elle.

The present paper aims at describing the measurement methods applied to mock-up cables in order to evaluate their dielectrics. The focus is on leakage current and temperature measurements together with the processing based upon them to assist in the selection of the more appropriate material.
