Upcoming decarbonized electricity networks will rely on the massive integration of renewable energies and the integration of HVDC links or grids into the existing AC system. However, these actions may provoke instabilities within the AC grid. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to develop solutions that allow TSOs to increase the controllability, stability, and reliability assessments of their hybrid AC/DC systems.

SuperGrid Institute’s Dynamic Virtual Admittance Control (DVAC) algorithm addresses these issues, offering a high-performance with an easy to implement triple action that shields power systems against disturbances.

Grid2030 – the RITSE project

The DVAC solution was developed within the Grid2030 program, a multi-year collaborative innovation programme driven by Red Eléctrica de España and InnoEnergy with the aim of anticipating the future challenges of energy transition, identifying the needs of TSOs and accelerating the development of disruptive technological solutions.

During this 2-year long project, SuperGrid Institute and IMDEA joined forces with the support of REE and created a consortium to run the “Reduced Inertia Transient Stability Enhancement” (RITSE) project. The RITSE project aimed to improve the transient stability of AC networks by coordinating the use of batteries and HVDC links equipped with supplementary control action using the DVAC solution.

REE was an early adopter of DVAC. During the Grid2030 programme, we worked together to show how a real embedded HVDC link can be improved to bring a benefit to the TSO from increasing security margins and net transfer capacity.
