Detection of Partial Discharge Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on the use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for partial discharge (PD) detection in high-voltage power cables. The work is based on experimental data acquired during controlled test campaigns conducted in collaboration between FEBUS Optics and SuperGrid Institute. Due to intrinsic bandwidth limitations of DAS systems, direct detection of high-frequency PD acoustic pulses is not possible. The proposed approach therefore focuses on low-frequency signal analysis to identify indirect PD signatures. Experimental results highlight characteristic spectral behaviors that allow discrimination between healthy and defective cable configurations.
