General Context

The program “Power Electronics & Converters” addresses power electronic converters for MVDC & HVDC. In particular, we develop AC-DC and DC-DC power converters, medium frequency transformers and high voltage power electronics building blocks.

The purpose of the internship is to analyse the selected power conversion technologies (isolated DC/DC converters and 2 and 3 level AC/DC converters) for medium voltage applications: smart-substation, transportation, wind, solar, hydro and storage, and to develop a design tool for power converters. Some parts of the design tool already exist.

Objectives / Missions

The main tasks of this internship are:

  • Analyse the medium voltage applications and power conversion technologies, most likely:
    • solar applications (MPPT and grid integration)
    • energy storage
    • electric vehicle charging stations
  • Study the system requirements for the selected applications and the state of the art on the technologies and future trends,
  • Benchmark of the existing tools (Infineon, ABB, powerforge…)
  • Develop a design tool for power converters for the selected applications and topologies in Matlab without advanced toolbox
  • Write the synthesis report.

The internship will be realised in R&D program Power Electronics & Converters (research group of around 30 people).

Candidate Profile

Master or engineering school student in the last year of his/her studies. The student must have a good knowledge in electrical engineering (power electronics and power systems). An experience with Matlab/Simulink software is appreciated.
